How a Holistic Approach Helps with Self Improvement
When we think of self improvement, we often focus on one area of our lives that is giving us the biggest problem. Finances, weight and relationships seem to be top of the list for many people. While focusing on problem areas with a view to solving them is certainly helpful and is far better than doing nothing, in the long term we will all achieve more on our personal development journey if we take a more holistic approach.
The holistic approach to self improvement is all about helping people to achieve balance. It poses the questions: Can a person who is considered successful in business or their career really be successful, if their inner life is a mess? Is someone really successful if they have failed their children? Is it possible to be really successful and also be unconscious about the global effects of your attitudes and actions? Can you be truly successful if you suffer from poor physical and mental health? By asking such challenging questions, it guides us to evaluate areas of our lives we might otherwise ignore. We are encouraged to consider, not only our own lives, but the impact our lives have on those around us, the broader community and even globally. Holistic self improvement is about achieving balance while improving all areas of our lives in such a way as to benefit others in the process and do no harm.
The planet is struggling under the weight of pollution and the effects of unfettered industrialization. Powerful people have in the past stifled or hijacked the debate about climate change, dying rivers, salination of soils and the need to change our energy sources and methods of operation. Yet, no doubt these very people were considered highly successful individuals who may well have also been philanthropic with their wealth. Under the holistic model of self improvement, such people would not be considered genuinely successful. In their pursuit of profit, they have created major problems that place the future of this planet and therefore our own survival at risk. Holistic self improvement practices are an attempt to bring balance, health, happiness and true success to the world, by changing one person at a time.
